An unexpected event upset the life of Sr. Jacqueline Jean McEwan. She is a Daughter of Wisdom from Great Britain who has been a missionary in India since 1982, almost 30 years ago! She was proceeding as usual to undertake due process for the renewal of her residence permit, when she learned last July that the Indian Government refused to grant it to her. A general outcry arose from the slums of Seshdripuram, Indirapuram and Chikkanayanakanahalli, and almost immediately it was echoed in the media. All Bangalore and even the whole world were talking about it.

Why this outcry ? Sr. Jacqueline Jean is certainly not a political, cultural or literary star. She is an ordinary Sister who silently dedicates her life to the victims of leprosy and to the destitute who try to survive in a society oriented toward efficiency and profit. In the forefront of this refusal, the outcry came from the poor. Sr. Jacqueline Jean works at the Sumanahalli Center, a non-profit organization for the screening, treatment and rehabilitation of the persons affected by leprosy. She even drew up and implemented a program for the education of more than 500 children. Fortunately, the days are gone when children had to follow their parents into begging since now they can attend school.

The cries of the people and the echo in the media forced the government to take a step backward …it granted Sr Jacqueline Jean one month respite. A few days later, recognizing that an error had been done, Sister’s Visa is restored without any time limit. She is free to stay in India as long as she wishes. Why this about-face ? The cries of the poor were heard !

Sr. Jacqueline Jean McEwan will be able to continue to criss-cross Bangalore, going up and down those streets to bring comfort, affection, compassion and care. For many she is more than a mother. And the poor will continue to rejoice because their dear “Mother Teresa” of Bengaluru (Bangalore) will remain with them for a long time!
