The Daughters of Wisdom in Indonesia have just witnessed very touching moments with the commitment in the Congregation of the first Indonesian Sisters.
Numerous persons, instruments of the Lord, have contributed to this achievement. One of these persons has remained silently in the background. She is a Daughter of Wisdom from the Netherlands, Sr Jakoba de la Divine Sagesse, born Marie Elisabeth Donkers (known as Riet) in Indonesia on February 10th, 1916 of an Indonesian mother and Dutch father. Riet lived in Indonesia until the age of 16 when she settled in the Netherlands with her parents in order to do her studies. She entered the Congregation in the year 1942. She had a very fruitful religious life and passed away in the Netherlands on July 2, 2008.
During her whole life, Sr Jakoba remained very attached to her “mother land” and always wished and prayed that the Daughters of Wisdom would come to Indonesia. In 2003, with deep joy she heard of the first foundation of Daughters of Wisdom in Poco-Flores. At the end of her life, it was difficult for her to read and one of her friends, a former student, was reading to her. When in the “Bulletin Sagesse Internationale there was mention of Indonesia, always Sr Jakoba would request her friend to read the passage again...
“Sr Jakoba, your heart’s desire has been granted. Two Indonesians: Avilia Inur and Maria Suryati are now Daughters of Wisdom and will be involved in the mission in your beloved land. Pray for them...Watch over them....”
