Wisdom’s hour in Papua !

In June of this year, three members of the General Council  (Srs. Louise Madore – Superior General, Jacqueline Portefaix and Diane Capozzi) ventured forth to Papua New Guinea with a two-fold mission: to discern the new Leadership Team with the Sisters of the Region and to join in the festivities of the Jubilee Celebration of 50 years of presence of the Daughters of Wisdom in this distant part of the world. History in the making!  A “first” for our Congregation.

We share here a little word on the new team.
After several days of Spirit-filled accompaniment, it was with great joy that the General Council named the new team, composed of four women of four different nationalities, one of whom is the first Melanesian sister to move into this level of leadership.  Needless to say, this is a turning point for the Region and for the whole of the Congregation as we mirror the emergence and shift of a new world order.

The day following the installation of this team, the General Council met with them for their first Council meeting together.  To the surprise and delight of all present, one member remarked that sitting around this table in Kiunga, a remote area of the Western Province of PNG, were seven women from seven different countries spanning four different continents!   Where else in the world and in what other contexts would just a gathering take place?  And if it could, what a transformation our world would undergo.  The wealth of the insights of the various cultures capable of dialoging and working together for the sake of the mission of the Congregation and well able to challenge one another was a source of enrichment for all.  One could not help but think how this small group of committed women religious can impact the very foundation of society and witness to the Good News by our way of being with each other.

Yes indeed, Wisdom goes out to the crossroads and calls all to Her table, regardless of race, creed, ethnicity, age or position in life.  All are invited and all are equal in participating in Her feast of diversity. With pride, we can pray to our Founders, the intercession so dear to all Daughters of Wisdom, “Look down from heaven on the vine you have planted and pray the Lord to bless it.”

Sr. Diane Capozzi, DW
General Councilor
