Sunday 18th May 2025 was a special occasion for Sr. Monica Tywang, DW as the Caribbean community in London expressed its gratitude for her 40 years of pastoral ministry before retiring to Romsey. There was a very life giving eucharist celebrated in St Mary of the Angels parish where Sr. Monica organised the Mass associated with the Notting Hill Carnival over many years. Afterwards about 80 people congregated in the church hall for a sumptuous meal, music and many moving speeches of gratitude. To them, Sr. Monica has been like a grandmother especially being there in times of need. The following sentiments were expressed by Cardinal Vincent Nichols:
“Since being appointed by Cardinal Basil Hume, OSB, to work alongside the Caribbean Chaplaincy team, here in Westminster, around 50 years ago, Sr. Monica has worked tirelessly. In particular I would like to express my thanks for her faithful witness at the Notting Hill Carnival; over many years, her pastoral care there has been a sign of Christ’s love in the midst of the crowds, bringing a gentle yet profound reminder of the Gospel to all those she met.”
